When an engine hasn't yet been manufactured, but is actively being engineered and sold, it is often referred to as a paper engine.  CG images help sell products during these stages of production.

For each engine I've ever worked on, a diverse amount of imagery is needed.

This includes huge renders for trade show walls and images spanning multiplexed monitors, down to smaller images for print, web and mobile apps.  This is an example from GE Aviations webpage that uses many of those repurposed images.  Some of these images were created just for this web usage and others were created originally as wall graphics for the Paris airshow in 2015.

Collaboration Is Key

I have often been tasked to work directly with GE engineers to recieve cad data for visualization.  This is often an ongoing process as many tollgates are required per FAA guidelines.  Often, web development and creative teams like the ones at Power Creative will come up with the required page compositions and my responsibility will be to provide imagery that meets the art directors requirements and specs.
